Karl Lagerfeld once said "my curiosity is insatiable, each day counts; new things should be discovered each and every day". It is not surprising that other than fashion designing, he has developed other interests in his life.
Lagerfeld has always had a true passion for photography, which he began practicing since 1987, initially for advertising campaigns, followed by a wide series of fashion shoots for several prestigious international magazines. During his travels abroad, and his walks through Paris he produced more personal images, which have been regularly published through the years by Steidl Books.
In 1996 he received the Cultural prize of theGerman Photographers Society.
His curious eye, and creative and cultivated mind add an original touch to his photographs, which also seem reminiscent of past times. The eclectic fashion designer has in fact a preference for photography spanning from the end of the nineteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. "I have a soft spot for Stieglitz, Steichen, Clarence,Demachy, and Alvin Langdon Coburn, as well as for German photographers of the nineteen-twenties, and for all those that have been later influenced by them, such as Helmut Newton, Peter Lindberg, or Ellen von Unwerth. Photography has become an important part of my life, and I now perceive the world through the lens of a camera. It adds a kind of critical detachment towards my work that helps me more than I imagined".
Lagerfeld feels that the success he has achieved in the world of fashion has intensified since he has begun practicing photography. "I perceive a very positive relationship between the two fields".
From the 15th of September to the 31st of October the Maison Europeenne de la Photo introduces an interesting ensemble of Lagerfeld's photographic works. The exhibition is divided into two parts, the first is dedicated to his favourite, and strong themes which include portraits, fashion sequences, landscapes, and architecture; the second explores his more experimental work, particularly based on the printing techniques he uses. "Paper is among my favourite materials. It is the starting point for a drawing and the final result for a photographic print".
An impressive catalogue printed by Steidl gathers the interesting selection of photos for this exhibition.
